The New Generation Queens is the story of Zanzibar's women's soccer team. On an island where religion bars women from playing soccer, the Queens very existence resists cultural norms and complicates assumptions about Islam and gender identity. When the girls qualify for a tournament on the mainland of Tanzania, they have the chance to leave the island for the first time and compete in front of scouts for Tanzania national team. The experience solidifies the team's commitment to share their pastime with others in Zanzibar and to spread the message that you can be a woman and a Muslim and a soccer player.
